🍸 PURPLE RAIN - Earth Month Lavender Cocktail of the Month

You know the saying, "April showers bring amazing cocktails!" Or something like that...

Celebrate Earth Month with this naturally colored lavender & lemon spritz. Read on to learn how we get that beautiful color.

🌿 Why We’re Raising a Glass

At The Rejoicing Vine, we believe every glass is a chance to Cultivate Life. This Earth Month, we’re sipping something special: Purple Rain. It’s a floral, zesty, color-shifting cocktail inspired by the rebirth of spring, the power of plants, and the beauty of living sustainably. No artificial dyes. No lab-made flavoring. Just nature doing its thing—with bubbles, of course.

🪄 Nature's Magic Trick

🤓 NERD ALERT! ⚠️ Things are about to get delightfully dorky. Side-effects may include (but are not limited to): spontaneous laughter, accidental learning, curiousity cravings, and an uncontrollable urge to share fun facts with friends.

We are all pretty familiar with how the presence of wine can cause a shift in our mood, but did you know it can also cause a shift in color?

Butterfly pea flower powder is naturally a deep blue color. Make an herbal tea with it and you get an amazing blue like you see in the image below. But add a little wine...and VOILA! Nature's magic trick!

Butterfly pea flower tea is vibrant blue

It transforms to a vibrant purple! What's going on here? Well simply put, the acid in the wine (and lemon juice in the Purple Rain) are modifying the pigments and shifting their color to a purple hue! Isn't God's creation amazing? Dare we say, MAGICAL?

To further nerd out, did you know a similar effect happens with wine even without butterfly pea flower added to it? Grape juice is naturally cleaRed wines get their color from plant compounds we nerds call "anthocyanins". Anthocyanins are found in all sorts of plants and in grapes they're concentrated in the skins. The red wine making processes extracts a lot of these anthocyanins, staining the grape juice. The exact color of the anthocyanins suspended in your glass of red will change based on the acidity of the wine. Add a little acid and you'll get more vivid-red hues. Take away a little acid and you'll get more blue-purple hues.

✨ Purple Rain: The Ingredients

This Earth Month lavender cocktail is clean, botanical, and a little dramatic (just like spring weather). As always we prefer natural fresh (and local when possible) ingredients to provide the best flavor and lowest impact on the environment.

  • 4 oz of Blanco No. 5 bubbly

  • 0.5 oz organic lavender syrup (see below to make your own)

  • 0.5 oz organic lemon juice

  • 1.5 oz alcohol-free gin (we love Ritual Brand) or alcohol-full gin

  • 1/8 tsp of organic butterfly pea flower powder

  • Garnish: edible flowers or lemon twist

🙅🏽‍♀️ Make it an Earth Month Mocktail

Looking for the cocktail flavor without any alcohol? Easy peasy lemon squeezy! Simply substitute the 4 oz of Blanco No. 5 bubbly with a sparkling tea, water, or ginger ale. If you try it let us know in the comments what we should name it. :) Purple Sane? Purple No-Pain?

🍋 How to Mix It

  1. Add all the non-bubbly ingredients to a shaker with ice (lavender syrup, lemon juice, gin, and butterfly pea flower).

  2. Shake gently and strain into a flute or coupe glass.

  3. Top with chilled Rejoicing Vine sparkling wine.

  4. Admire the beautiful purple color as it sparkles—cheers to Earth Month!

  5. Garnish with an edible flower or a curl of lemon peel.

Batching for a group? Multiply the ingredients, stir in a pitcher, and top each glass with bubbles when serving.

🪻Lavender Simple Syrup Recipe

Want to make your own lavender simple syrup? It's, well, as the name implies, it's simple.

  • 1 cup water

  • 1 cup organic sugar

  • 1/4 cup dried organic lavender flowers

Combine those 3 ingredients an a pot and bring to a simmer. Simmer and stir until the sugar is dissolved then turn off the heat and cover for ~10 minutes (the longer you let the lavender steep the more flavor you'll extract but be careful not to make it too soapy). After the steeping time strain into a mason jar. The syrup is ready to use and can be kept in the refrigerator for about a month.

💜 Why It Matters

We’re committed to ingredients that honor the Earth—from our regeneratively farmed vineyard to the herbal infusions in this cocktail. Purple Rain is free of artificial coloring, relying on the natural beauty of butterfly pea flower to bring the drama. It’s a reminder that we don’t need shortcuts—just good farming, thoughtful sourcing, and a little of mother nature's magic.

Every time you choose sustainable wine, you help protect pollinators, reduce chemicals, and invest in land that gives back. And that’s worth a toast.
